Happy Birthday Earth Fair Market!

Pics 001Having not ever been to the Earth Fair Market, I made my way there on Saturday morning not really expecting that much. My impression was that it might be an intimate and quiet affair with well-intentioned stall owners hanging out waiting for the few stall-crawlers to fork out great amounts of their wallet-greens for the goods on sale.

Was I surprised! The market is situated in a large hall behind and to the left of Builder’s Warehouse along the main road in Tokai. The second we walked into the large doors our senses were excited and entertained by the delicious smells, colourful sights and buzzing sounds.

There were so many customers supporting the carefully and beautifully set up stalls of fresh breads, organically grown produce and handmade preserves there was almost no room to push past. But even though it was slightly crowed the mood of everyone was one of celebration and joviality.Pics 007

This market is definitely one to visit hungry! Most of them had tantalizing and tempting tasters allowing you to test what you’re buying before you hand over the money. And, to celebrate the market’s 1 year birthday many of the stalls had birthday specials on, one young lady was even giving away some light and fluffy marshmallows as birthday gifts.

Pics 009What’s wonderful about all the products is that they are locally produced and mostly eco-friendly or organic! The plates, knifes and forks are made of recycled plastic (and in some instances even wood) which are quickly collected after eager eaters finish their meals. The cutlery and plates are reused meaning very little waste. The products you do decide to buy are handed over in brown paper bags – there are little or no plastic bags used.

This market is a wonderful place for the family to enjoy healthy and eco-friendly meals together on a Saturday. And if the parents decide to indulge in some of the local beer on tap there is a kiddies corner to keep the children occupied.

Pics 017I definitely would suggest this market to anyone who enjoys good food and is environmentally aware. What a great initiative – making it easy to eat out with a clear eco-conscience

Hopefully see you there next Saturday between 9am and 2pm!
