Australia: New Carbon Cutting Laws

August 26th, 2010

758179_mapAustralia’s Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government said today that they will be enacting tough carbon cutting laws.

They said that their climate change and greenhouse gas reduction bill would be setting a target of cutting down carbon emissions by 40% by 2020 from their 1990 levels, and that the cut would rise to 80% by 2050!

That would be amazing!

The aim is that nearly 400 000 people would become carbon neutral by 2060. If it’s possible in Australia then it should be possible all over the world! IT seems there are calls within Australian government to step up to the responsibility required to alleviating the issue of carbon emissions.

See the full story here.

Hope Australia can do it! And even more so, I hope the rest of the world who is not being environmentally responsible takes note!

South African Plant Spekboom Soaks Up CO2

August 18th, 2010

spekboomco2According to recent discoveries, Spekboom has some brilliant CO2-storing capabilities.

It has the ability to offset harmful carbon emissions much like that of a subtropical forest! What’s wonderful about this discovery is that 1) it is indigenously a South African plant and 2)  opens the gateway of possibilities regarding the healing nature of plants.

Just imagine all the interesting abilities we have yet to discover in other plants!

The evidence has been gathered over a period of seven years in the Eastern Cape. Spekboom, also known as “Elephant’s Food” is now in the spotlight as a potential goldmine for South Africa in the international carbon trading market.

The findings state that a hectare of the Portulacaria afra could possibly capture about 4 tonnes of carbon emissions in a single year.

Occuring mainly in the south-eastern parts of South Africa, Spekboom is an evergreen succulent that can reach 2,5 metres. It thrives in rocky and dry areas it also flourished in watered beds.

What an amazing little plant! It’s so good to hear of a natural carbon combatant. You can even do your little bit for the enviroment just by planting some Spekboom in your garden!

Here’s a great initiative using Spekboom as their motivational source: http://www.spekboom.com/

Here’s to fresh, clean air!

Bamboo Bicycles

July 22nd, 2010

1262195_bamooIt’s official: apart from walking, bicycles are the most ecofriendly form of transport there is (in my mind anyway).

Check out this bicycle made out of bamboo. What an amazing idea! The bamboo bicycle is for everyday use as well as for racing, and every bike is made uniquely and specifically for the rider (Tubes are chosen specifically with the weight of the rider in mind).

The bamboo used is smoked and heat treated (this prevents splitting) and the lugs are made out of hemp fiber. This truly is a “green” mode of transportation.

The Calfee design has won the Best Road Bike, Best Off-Road Bike and Peoples’ Choices awards – and it has a ten year warranty! The bicycle itself looks beautiful and sturdy, and potentially causes the least amount of carbon dioxide emissions during the frame production process than any other bicycle.

What do you say? Should we all get back on our bikes?

SABC3′s Carbon Free Card

July 15th, 2010

1287696_three_treesOne of our local television channels, SABC 3, has been running a campaign for some time now focusing on providing “a solution to our carbon emissions and to restore the South African landscape to its formal glory”.

It’s always great to see any business throwing a lot of their energy into giving something back to the world and the community and this is no exception.

The idea behind the card is that you have an effect on the restoration of the ecosystem by having an indigenous tree planted on your behalf  in a protected sanctuary. In an ingenious use of technology, you will be able to watch your tree grow via GPS co-ordinates, meaning you don’t have to actually visit the protected sanctuary in order to see the results of your efforts.

All you have to do is purchase the Carbon Free or CarbonWorx Card which ensures that the tree will be planted on your behalf. Once you have the card you will be able to actively acquire points using the card at participating stores. Once you have gained a specified amount of points you can purchase more trees with these points meaning you can continuously be helping to restore and re-establish the ecosystems that are being threatened due to industrialisation and a failure to manage rural areas.

If you are interested in purchasing a Carbon Free Card and buying your own indigenous tree, contact CarbonWorx on 011 293 0000 or check out their website.

Have Tree Planting,

South African Based Company, Optimal Energy, Revolutionises Electric Car

July 14th, 2010

imageOptimal Energy, a local company with offices in Cape Town, has their revolutionary electric vehicle Joule on display in Geneva at the 80th International Motor Show.

This vehicle has been designed by South African-born Keith Helfet, and was developed from a static display model into a pre-production prototype courtesy of Zagato’s Total Design Centre.

Hand-built near Port Elizabeth by Hi-Tech Automotive, the Joule is expected to become the benchmark for Optimal Energy’s further ventures. Focused exclusively on achieving the perfect electric car, Optimal Energy are pioneers in creating a new kind of car and subsequently will lead the way towards new ways of buying vehicles and ownership.

The company’s vision is to see the inefficient usage of the world’s finite energy sources changed. By focusing their time, expertise and energy on discovering world class solutions for urban transport, Optimal Energy are taking steps forward in creating a world where energy can be used efficiently, decrease 2010_06_17_Front_3Quarterpollution that affects climate change as well as making the electric vehicle options available to the public.

They are doing all this in the form of Joule, Africa’s first “electric engineering masterpiece”.  The vehicle is said to offer “an optimal, no-compromise, zero emission urban driving experience”

Sounds like an environmental dream! If your interested in finding out more, visit Optimal Energy’s website, or call them on 021 462 7804.

Green Living Tip #6

June 29th, 2010

Grow your own, eat your own.

1073218_baby_tomatoesNow that you’ve started you’re own veggie compost box, put that nutritious compost to good use by starting your own little veggie patch at home!

What better way to live green than by planting, growing and eating your very own vegetables? And the peelings and cut off from the carrots of broccoli that you take out of your garden will inevitably go back into it – in your compost box.

What’s even better about your own veggie garden is you can get the kids involved and spend quality time with them while they learn about healthy foods, and you can eat your veggies in the safe knowledge that no bad chemicals were used to grow them – they will be 100% organic!

When dealing with insects or pests that may attack your new plants there are a whole range of natural organic pesticides.

Some easy-to-grow plants are courgettes (baby marrow), mange tout (sugar pea) and broccoli. If you grow these in your garden it means you won’t have to buy imported produce that have had to be shipped/flown in meaning more carbon emissions.

You can let your children choose their own veggie to grow and help them with the responsibility of caring for the plant and ensuring it’s growth – this will get your child interested in the plant world as well as learn about the responsibilities of looking after things in life.

Let me know how your new organic veggie patches go!

Cape Town’s Eco-Friendly Southern Line

June 17th, 2010

1123211_boulder_beach_hdrThe Southern train line in Cape Town really is a jewel.

Not only are all the stations along close to tourist attractions and delightful shops, but the line runs parallel with the Indian ocean offering lucky travelers the time and the means of watching the world go by, or spotting a cheeky whale tail or two.

Now, the Southern line has even more to boast about. During the first week of June Metrorail Western Cape in association with Cape Town Tourism and The Green Cab (eco-friendly travel provider) have launched The Rail and Ride initiative.

This initiative makes use of eco-friendly rail travel with that of Green Cabs (reduced emission vehicles). The cost of R600 will get you the train ride, Green Cab ride, entry into Boulders Penguin Colony, Cape Point entry, a specialised tour guide as well as security.

While this is a great eco-friendly initiative, the price might be a bit steep for your every day South African. I catch the trains daily and for about R20 you can take the Town train to Fish Hoek and back again and take in the sights for yourself.

If however you want to enjoy The Rail and Ride Experience the service is offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays departing from platform 5 at Cape Town Station.

You can contact the Green Cab on 086 184 3473 or Cape Town Tourism on 021 487 6800 for more information.

Happy Exploring!

Greenpeace on climate control

June 10th, 2010

In a recent online article Greenpeace talk about how renewable resources can create around 8.5 million jobs by 2030!1214808_decommissioned

Their whole campaign is to try get countries and corporations to see the value of investing in people rather than “dirty and dangerous” fossil fuels.

If these statistics are true then why aren’t these countries and corporations convinced?

Greenpeace’s argument is pretty persuasive numbers-wise – according to them the global market for renewable energy sources could be worth around 600 billion dollars by 2030.

While some countries are pledging to lower their emissions, there has not been an across-the-board emissions cut target.

Greenpeace have even proffered a detailed report on how to go about cutting carbon emissions while concurrently building economic growth.

So, why is no one listening closely to Greenpeace? You can read the full article here: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/jobs/Renewables-can-create-85-mn-jobs-Greenpeace/articleshow/6019620.cms

And tell me what you think.
